AGA: US commercial gaming revenue missed May's record-breaking level
According to the American Gaming Association, over the month of May, commercial gaming across the United States reached the second highest total ever recorded.
With this month's total of $5.1 billion monitored by land-based casinos, sportsbooks, and online gambling, the $5 billion threshold has been crossed for the third month in a row.
In spite of the continued difficulties, the industry group has released the most recent statistics from its Commercial Gaming Revenue Tracker and said that the sector is on course "for another possibly record-setting year."
Notwithstanding problems with the supply chain, labor shortages, and inflation, the revenue for the first five months of 2022 reached $24.47 billion, which is a 21 percent increase over the same time in 2021.
Since February 2021, when YoY comparisons moved beyond months in which the sector was working with major COVID-related operational constraints, the year-on-year growth rate has been the worst it has been at 9.5%.
Only the District of Columbia, Kansas, Mississippi, and South Dakota are lagging behind their 2021 pace through the first three quarters of the year, while eighteen of the thirty-one states that had commercial gaming operations a year ago showed an increase in revenue through the month.
The 31-day period saw land-based casino slot machines and table games combining to bring in revenue of $4.13 billion throughout the country. This figure represents an increase of 1.4 percent year over year and marks a performance that ranks as the third-highest month.
Also, on a yearly basis, the amount of money made through commercial gaming such as online gambling and sports betting has been growing throughout the month.
During the month of May, land-based and online sportsbooks generated $555 million in revenue from commercial operations in 26 states. This represents a 78.2 percent increase from 2021, when sports betting markets were live across 20 states and the District of Columbia, to today, when they are live across 30 states and the District of Columbia.
The income from commercial sports betting for the first five months of 2022 is at $2.7 billion, which is 78 percent more than the revenue over the same time in the previous year.
May saw a total income of $406.4 million generated by online casinos in Connecticut, Delaware, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. This figure marks an increase of 30.9 percent compared to the previous five-state total in 2021. The yearly performance of the operations comes in at $2.03 billion through five months, which is an increase of 45.6%.
When the income from igaming and sports betting were combined, they accounted for 18.9 percent of the total revenue from commercial gaming in May. This percentage is comparable to what it was in the previous months.
